Vogue Mimics Giant Propeller’s Juniper Campaign

…would attempt to copy the campaign we created for Eric Brand’s new Juniper collection with such detailed precision. The shoot – called, “For the love of art” –features former Spice Girl-turned-designer Victoria Beckham posing seductively on top of furniture in a series of three covers for Spanish Vogue’s February 2018 issue.

On one cover she’s clad in a nude bodysuit atop a wooden table, much like our imagery here…

In another shot she’s wearing one of her own red dresses with a leg perched up, and in a third cover released by the Conde Naste-owned magazine she’s sitting on the edge of a chair while striking a dancer’s pose, which looks a little familiar…

The video spot for these covers depicts Beckham actually doing ballet.

Ballet… which we also heavily featured in our video for Juniper (except we used an actual professional ballerina). The fact that we created such a peculiar campaign in collaboration with Eric Brand for his new collection and then pushed it around the globe would seem to indicate this is a bit more than a coincidence. See for yourselves…

While the premise of having models drape themselves over furniture is by no means patented, we found these Vogue covers to be strikingly similar to our own imagery that Giant Propeller co-founder Jordan Freda creative directed in collaboration with Eric Brand’s vision. From the moody lighting, to the highly specific distressed beige backdrop, to the poses on top of tables and chairs, we can’t help but feel the Vogue shoot was in some part inspired by the work photographer Sebastien Micke and Freda created with Brand… at the very least we were in their moodboard.

The idea for Juniper was to connect pieces with personalities and physicalities that bring the furniture to life in bold, distinctive ways. There is a tone, an attitude, and a visual aesthetic that strikes us as being incredibly similar to the new Vogue covers. And if our campaign somehow influenced Boo George / Vogue, then we’re honored, but hey guys – next time just hit us up directly and we’d be more than happy to work together!

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time advertising has had suspiciously similar doppelgangers crop up. Over the years, either by coincidence or design, various brands have found themselves virtually mirrored in other campaigns…

When all is said and done, we’ll choose to be humbled and amused by any potential imitation going on with our creative (within reason!). We find inspiration among all kinds of artists, filmmakers and musicians, so we get it. But we also understand the difference between imitation and reinvention, and we feel compelled to take these influences and make them our own by filtering them through the insane minds at the Giant Propeller HQ. After all, blazing trails is way more fun than simply using them…

Keepin it real,

Giant Propeller
